Hi there! We are putting on a show called Air Hunger as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival this October. Air Hunger is a full-length dance work consisting of 9 performers on 9 double beds in the Magdalen Laundry at Abbotsford Convent 5th, 6th, 7th October. Air Hunger is an intimate, personal representation of invisible chronic illness through the site of the bed.
Your bed is where you dream, sweat, sleep, cry, make love, hold and are held. With illness, a bed can become an entire universe. A swamp, an island, an embrace.
Our show will be premiering in the Magdalen Laundry at Abbotsford Convent. This Space was in use as an Asylum/ commercial laundry from the 1880s to 1960’s. Girls housed at the convent worked without pay for food or lodgings. The Magdalen Laundry carries a heavy history of restriction and silencing. Author Megan O’rourke asserts that “to have an invisible chronic illness is to remain marginalised by indifference.” Premiering our show in this space provides an opportunity for our artists, audiences and communities to experience the sharing of new narratives and histories regarding chronic invisible illness that have been overlooked.
Over the past few months, our performers, creative team and production team have been working intensively to put this show together. The costs we are trying to cover include venue space, equipment hire, artist fees and technician fees.
In a system without enough support for the arts or for those with chronic illness, we humbly ask for a contribution towards helping this show come to life. Contributing to our ability to make this show, is a contribution towards the dissemination and magnification of marginalised voices and experiences.
We would greatly appreciate any contribution you can make to help our group of young artists bring a very important story to the stage this Fringe Festival!
